Cairde Word returns with Writing from the West featuring Kevin Barry, Louise Kennedy and Una Mannion in conversation with Siobhan Mannion.
Kevin Barry is the author of three novels and three short story collections, most recently That Old Country Music. His fiction has appeared in the New Yorker, Granta, Harper and many other journals, and his books have been translated into more than 20 languages. He also works as a playwright and screenwriter. He lives in south County Sligo.
Louise Kennedy’s writing has appeared in literary journals including The Stinging Fly, The Tangerine, Banshee, Wasifiri and Ambit. Her debut short story collection The End of the World is a Cul-de-sac is due to be released on April 1st. She has written for the Guardian, the Irish Times, BBC Radio 4 and RTE Radio 1. She was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Audible Short Story Award in both 2019 and 2020. She currently lives in Sligo with her husband and two children.
Una Mannion has won numerous prizes for her short fiction and poetry including The Hennessy New Irish Writing Poetry Award, The Cúirt International Short Fiction Award, Doolin short story prize, Ambit fiction award, Allingham short fiction prize among others. Her work has been published in numerous journals such as Crannóg, The Lonely Crowd, Bare Fiction, Ambit and her stories have been included in recent collections: Galway Stories: 2020 edited by Lisa Frank and Alan McMonagle (April 2020) and The Art of the Glimpse: 100 Irish Short Stories edited by Sinéad Gleeson, (autumn 2020). Una Mannion’s debut novel A Crooked Tree will be published in 2021.
Siobhán Mannion’s stories and essays have appeared in Granta, Winter Papers, Banshee, The Long Gaze Back, Galway Stories: 2020, and elsewhere. She has written plays and non-fiction pieces for radio, and is a recipient of an Arts Council Literature Bursary, a MacDowell fellowship, and two Hennessy Awards. She lives in Dublin, where she worked for many years as a radio producer in RTÉ and is now completing a collection of stories.
