… the jaw-droppingly stunning, woozy voice of Ríoghnach Connolly… | THE GUARDIAN

The Breath is Stuart McCallum, acclaimed guitar whiz and ex-member of The Cinematic Orchestra, and Ríoghnach Connolly, multi award-winning folk singer including RTÉ Best Folk Singer 2025. Softly-spoken Stuart and larger-than-life Ríoghnach met on Manchester’s gig circuit in the late noughties and their connection was immediate. They formed The Breath in 2016, crafting a contemporary blend of alt-folk with raw, heartfelt storytelling.

Since forming their music has explored themes from childhood and first love to cultural loss and post-colonial injustice. Ríoghnach’s powerful, soulful voice paired with Stuart’s understated guitar brilliance creates an intimate yet expansive sound. Their latest album, Land of My Other (2023), is a stunning collection of acoustic songs that stir and soothe in equal measure.

An affecting blend... McCallum provides the grandeur and artifice and Connolly the intimacy and purity |
